The factors of a reliable diagnosis

The symptoms as well as the autoantibodies a patient shows should always be taken into account for an accurate and reliable diagnosis. But there are additional factors to consider.

A diagnosis can be made by considering different aspects:

  • Medical history: The doctor will ask the patient about the symptoms and how long the patient has had them.
  • Clinical examination: The doctor will check for any medical signs (e.g., swollen lymph nodes, inflamed joints etc.).
  • Laboratory tests: Doctors may test the patient's blood for inflammation markers and/or autoantibodies.

Additionally, knowledge and awareness on the part of the doctor and effective communication between doctor and patient are essential to the process of making an accurate diagnosis.

As in all diagnostic testing, the diagnosis is made by the physican based on both test results and the patient history.
