Mesna


Mesna (2 -mercaptoethane sulphonate), a thiol compound is used to prevent hemorrhagic cystitis, complication of cyclophosphamide treatment.
 
Incidence
Severe reactions: 3/83.
 
All reactions: 4/31.
 
Clinical manifestations
Macular pruriginous rash.
 
Fever.
 
Urticaria.
 
Diagnostic methods
2 cases with delayed type patch-tests reactions.
 
No specific IgE found.
 
Mechanisms
Unknown.
 
Management
Benefits of mesna outweigh the risk of allergic reactions.
 
Corticosteroids may be useful.
